Summer 2025

June 9 - July 25, 2025

Volunteer in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania this summer with Daraja Music Initiative! Two, three, and four-week sessions are available each summer in June and July.

Volunteer openings are available for:

  • Music educators (clarinet/woodwinds, strings, general music)

  • Conservationists

  • Instrument repair technicians

  • Passionate individuals with a desire to get involved!

Music educator volunteers teach group and private lessons to DMI students, perform in community concerts and outreach events, and participate in the conservation of African Blackwood (Mpingo) through community tree plantings and conservation education initiatives. 

Program fees include a 3-day, 2-night safari exploring the beauty of East Africa at Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara. Fees also cover volunteer housing, all meals and drinking water, as well as the cost of all in-country transportation (including to and from the airport).

Volunteer Applications

Want to join us in Tanzania this summer? Start by filling out the volunteer application below. As part of the application process, you’ll be asked to sign up for an interview via calendly. Once we’ve received both your application and your interview appointment request, your application will be reviewed. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis starting in October. To be considered for an Early Bird discount on program fees, apply by January 15, 2024. The final application deadline is February 15, 2025.

Early Bird Applications:
Early Bird applicants receive $200 off program fees for 3- and 4-week sessions!

  • Apply, interview, and pay a $500 non-refundable deposit by January 31st, 2025

  • Book your flights and pay remaining program fees by April 15th, 2025*

Regular Applications:

  • Apply by February 15th, 2025 to be considered as a volunteer for our Summer 2025 program

  • Confirm your participation and pay a $500 non-refundable deposit March 15th, 2025

  • Book your flights and pay remaining program fees by April 15th, 2025*

** The program fee payment deadline can be extended as needed to accommodate grant cycles, pending scholarships, and other financial situations. Reach out to us to find a solution to fit your needs.

Information Sessions

Info sessions are held via Zoom September through February, and are currently paused while we prepare to arrive in Tanzania for Summer 2025. In the meantime, if you’d like to lear more about volunteering in Tanzania or getting involved with DMI, please contact us!

Summer 2025 Program Fees

Program fees for volunteers cover the cost of housing, food, transportation in Tanzania, and participation in all student fieldtrips and activities. Fees also include the cost of a 2-day 3-night safari in Tanzania, visiting Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara, led by expert guides from Materuni Tours. Program fees do not include airfare or visas.

  • 2 week session: $2800

  • 3 week session: $3000

  • 4 week session: $3200

Many of our volunteers travel to Tanzania with the help of grants and fundraising. You can learn more about what granting and fundraising opportunities may be available to you at one of our information sessions.

Early Bird Pricing:

Volunteers who apply and commit early receive special discounted pricing on 3- and 4-week sessions. Early bird applicants must apply by December 15th and be accepted, then pay their non-refundable $500 deposit by January 31st.
